Protect Yourself from Scams

In times of crisis or hardship, many people feel a strong urge to help others by donating to charitable causes or individual GoFundMe accounts. Unfortunately, this generosity can sometimes be exploited by scammers who take advantage of our willingness to give. Donation scams have become increasingly sophisticated, making it essential for potential donors to stay vigilant. Here are some tips to help you identify and avoid donation scams.

  • Look for red flags- such as a sense of urgency to donate, unexpected emails, texts, or calls from charities you’ve never heard of, lack of information about the organization, and misspelling or broken links on websites.
  • Verify before donating- take the time to research the organization or any GoFundMe account that states they are a victim of the fires. Do not contribute to an individual fundraising account unless you personally know the account holder. Websites like Charity Navigator and Guidestar can help you confirm a charity’s legitimacy and provide information on its financial health and accountability. You can also check if the charity is registered with the IRS as a 501(c)(3) organization, which means donations may be tax-deductible.
  • Trust your instincts- if something feels off, it most likely is. It’s perfectly acceptable to take a step back and think about your decision. Legitimate charities will appreciate that you want to do your due diligence.
  • Report scams- if you encounter a donation scam, consider reporting it to the appropriate authorities. In the U.S., scams can be reported to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) or your state’s attorney general.

When you make a donation through the Wescom Foundation, you can rest assured your contribution is legitimate and will support those in need. Join us by donating now through January 21, 2025. Wescom members can donate via Online Banking or the Wescom Mobile Banking App and community members at-large can donate by visiting wescom.org/donations.6
